Greater food security and a better environment through improved nitrogen fertilizer management (2011)

UK-China Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Network (SAIN)

Policy Brief No. 2, December 2010, 7p.

Policy Brief No2 is about improved N fertilizer management for better environment and food security, a brief summary of key points is as follows:

  • N fertilizer is essential for China`s long-term food security;
  • Over the past three decades, the continuous increase in N fertilizer use has led to a serious over-use which causes a series problems including low use efficiency, high non-point pollution of water, increased GHG emissions, soil acidification and reduced farmers` income
  • Numerous research evidence in China shows that N fertilizer use can be reduced by 30% in many regions and situations with no threat to China`s food security target; in fact it will lead to the "multiple wins" of improved farmer income, better environment, reduced energy use (for fertilizer manufacture) and reduced GHG emissions. These gains would have benefits for regional and global food security;
  • To achieve the target of optimum N fertilizer application, integration of technological interventions with supporting policies, information services and institutional innovations is essential.
