China as a World Factory: New Practices and Struggles of Migrant Women Workers (2005)

Pun Ngai

Chinese Working Women Network, 22 p.

How would migrant women workers understand themselves collectively in term of class and gender identity? Could they be organized as a new worker-subject newly emerged in post-socialist China? At the crossroads of China’s incorporation into global capitalism, what are the new forms of labor organizing and women empowerment?

This chapter hopes to open up these timely questions drawn from a ten-year struggle of a local NGO, The Chinese Working Women Network (CWWN) which started its projects in Shenzhen since 1996.
